English Language Arts Course Re-Development

Scope and Sequence

The purpose of this project is to organize English Language Arts course resources and strengthen curriculum development processes in this area.  At the end of the project, the English Language Arts will have a core curriculum with 

  • at least one version of common exams and assignments,
  • approved and supported literary texts
  • common literary theory, writing process, grammar and anthology texts,
  • templates for exams and assignments,
  • common units and topics,
  • unit maps, topic maps and unit plans,
  • exam blueprints,
  • and guidelines and procedures to review and maintain courses.

The intent is to re-use existing material and create new where needed.  Curriculum resources will be modified or developed to suit different programs, locations and deliveries.   

The project will follow a collaborative, rapid development model based on previous development projects.  The project will involve teachers as instructional designers, course developers and reviewers.  The process will include 5 key phases: prepare, plan, build, review, and revise.

Deliverables

For English Language Arts curriculum development, templates and guidelines will be created for the following:

  • course outlines
  • unit exams
  • written responses
  • content articles

For each of the English Language Arts - 1 courses, the following items will be created:

  • unit plans
  • topics map
  • course outline
  • 5 unit exams with answer keys
  • 5 unit exam blueprints
  • 1 critical response with rubric
  • 1 personal response with rubric
  • 1 creative response with rubric
  • 1 research response with rubric
  • content articles and exercises as needed

For each of the English Language Arts - 2 courses, the following items will be created:

  • unit plans
  • topics map
  • course outline
  • 5 unit exams with answer keys
  • 5 unit exam blueprints
  • 1 visual reflection with rubric
  • 1 literary exploration with rubric
  • 1 persuasive writing in context with rubric
  • 1 creative response with rubric
  • 1 research response with rubric
  • content articles and exercises as needed

Sequence

The first phase of the project will see the development of the three -1 courses.  The second phase will be the development of the -2 courses.
