Best Practices in Exam Development

Project

This research will identify best practices of rapid and collaborative exam development that are in use in Alberta’s community colleges. These best practices will then be used to define a practical exam development model that fully employs collaboration and can be done efficiently within time and resource constraints without sacrificing quality. This research would be a foundation of expertise in practical exam development. This model would be made available to Bow Valley College departments and to the larger community of practice. By sharing this model, Bow Valley College would be strengthening the community of practice, creating collaboration with partner colleges.

Surveys

An online survey will gather information about current and best practices in to the rapid and collaborative development of quality summative exams in our community of practice. To participate. simply complete the survey.  You may also pass the survey link on to other members in your organization or other Alberta community college educators you know.

By completing the survey, you are giving consent for the researchers to use the data gathered in a summary fashion in the project's final report. Specific references to organizations or individuals participating in the survey will not be made in the final research report.  At any point, you may stop completing the survey.  Incomplete responses will be removed.  At any point, you may request to have your responses removed by contacting the researchers.

During the survey you will enter in an email address.  A unique identification number will be assigned to your response. This identification number will then be emailed to you.  The unique identification number will allow researchers withdraw data upon request.  The email addresses will be kept in a participant list available only to the researchers and this list will be destroyed one year after the publication of the final report.

Focus Groups and Interviews

The researchers will be conducting one focus group at Bow Valley College and one focus group at each of three other partner colleges in Alberta.  These focus groups will help researchers gather ideas about current and best practices.  To set up a focus group or participate in one, contact Carey Hilgartner, the lead researcher.

The researchers will be conducting interviews at Bow Valley College and at three other partner colleges in Alberta.  These interviews will help researchers gather more detailed information about current and best practices in exam development.  Data from the interviews will be presented mainly in summary fashion.  Should quotes be necessary, the researchers will contact the individual directly for further written consent.  At this point, a participant may choose to be identified under a pseudonym.  To set up an interview, contact Carey Hilgartner, the lead researcher.

Results

A literature review of scholarly research on best practices in exam development for summative exams will be conducted by the lead researcher.  This literature review will be posted as part of the project's final report.

The final report will include the literature review and an analysis of the data gathered through the surveys, focus groups and interviews.  Copies of the report will be made available to participants,  A copy will be posted here and on Centre for Excellence in Foundational Learning site.

Findings from this report will be presented at Bow Valley College's Professional Development Day in 2012.  Additional presentations available at request.

Specific references to organizations or individuals will not be made in the final research report without additional consent obtained afterwards.  Participants may choose at anytime to withdraw from the study by making the request to Carey Hilgartner, the lead researcher.  Responses to surveys and interviews will be removed.
